Supervision and the Law

Course Description: Liability and ethical consideration relating to supervision is a concern counselors need to be aware of and not fear. Sandra Nye brings extensive experience in this area with her legal and social work background. Using professional ethics codes, practice standards, Illinois statutes, regulations and case materials, Sandra will help the participant understand the following:

  • How to apply the law to clinical supervision.
  • The legal nature of the supervision relationship and its contractual and ethical aspects.
  • Legal distinctions between supervision and consultation.
  • Professional practice standards for supervision and legal ramifications.
  • Supervision in the educational process, in agencies, and in private practice.
  • Licensing issues.
  • Professional liability, vicarious liability and risk avoidance.

About the Trainer: SANDRA G. NYE, JD, MSW holds a JD from De Paul University College of Law and an MSW from Loyola University School of Social Work, and is principal of The Law Offices of Nye and Associates, Ltd. in Chicago . Ms. Nye concentrates in the law of human service delivery and family law, consulting and practicing before administrative agencies and in the courts. Former professional posts include Director of Child and Family Law and Psychiatry, Institute for Juvenile Research; Asst. Professor of Jurisprudence in Psychiatry, University of Illinois Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine, Director of the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission; instructor and lecturer at the Family Institute, University of Chicago Graduate School of Social Service Administration, and the University of Illinois Jane Addams School of Social work. She has held offices and chairmanships in legal and human service professional associations, participated in drafting mental health, child protection and confidentiality legislation, lectures nationally and has authored books, chapters, and numerous articles on the law of families and clinical practice.

Continuing Education Hours: This program is recognized as providing 6 CEU’s for: LPC/LCPC, LSW/LCSW.

Confirmations / Directions: Upon receipt of the registration form, we will mail or email a confirmation letter including location and directions. There will be no confirmations sent for registrations received one week or less prior to the workshop.

Refund Policy: Registrations cancelled before one week prior to the workshop will be refunded their cost minus a $25 administrative fee. Registration can be applied to another available training date, based on availability. There are no refunds within one week of the training.

Registration Deadlines: Registrations should be received one week prior to each workshop. Space is limited, and early registration is encouraged.
